Eco Friendly Cars Selling Like Hotcakes

The highly fuel efficient Toyota PriusHave you driven a Prius lately? If you haven’t, chances are you have definitely seen one on the road. Toyota recently announced that they have sold over one million Prii (the official plural of Prius) in the U.S. and over two million worldwide. This pretty much answers the question, “Is the world ready for hybrids?” It’s clear that for the past decade the Prius has paved the way. Now many others are following that path.

Toyota faces stiff competition now that the Chevy Volt is on the streets. One of our associates recently purchased the Volt and claims, “It is as nice as my Lexus.” And you can’t rule out the fierce competition from other major players like Tesla Motors, who offers an all electric luxury production car.

If you’re wondering what’s fueling this explosion in the hybrid market, then you probably aren’t paying for your own gas. The third generation Prius recently topped the EPA’s list of the Most Fuel Efficient Vehicles for 2011. The Prius boasts 51 miles per gallon on the highway. Toyota stated in a press release that when compared with an average car, the Prius saved $2.19 billion in fuel costs and 12.4 million tons of CO2 emissions since its inception. The company also stated that “more than 97 percent of all Toyota Prii sold since 2000 are still on the road.” With that incredible gas mileage and record of reliability, it’s no wonder why they are leading the market in eco friendly cars.

It is encouraging to see so much funding and attention going to efficiency. Globally we are achieving many breakthroughs in technology. Those developments reward us with these massive improvements in fuel economy. I, for one, have no doubt that the world is indeed ready for hybrids. We are in the midst of a greener dawn.
