With textile waste accounting for 5% of our landfills, it's no surprise that the fashion industry has gotten a bad reputation for environmental pollution. A handful of designers have decided to change that with new efforts to raise environmental awareness. The March 29th event, Runway to Green, kicked off an eco fashion show benefiting environmental organizations such as the Alliance for Climate Protection, the National Resource Defense Council and Oceana.

29 world-famous designers came together to raise funds for this environmental cause. Vogue sponsored this promotion that included fashion brands like Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, Jason Wu and Marc Jacobs. At least 10% of the proceeds will be donated to one of the various environmental organizations. To view the Runway to Green Collection, see net-a-porter.com.

At this event, there were no eco-friendly requirements of the pieces. Focus was on the donation rather than on the source of the materials. With all of the eco friendly clothing and eco friendly jewelry options now available to the world of fashion, hopefully next year that will become part of the environmental contribution as well.
