It’s time to buy a gift. So you did your due-diligence and found an eco-friendly product. Hooray! Now you’re ready to wrap it. But, what do you use? Reuse your Sunday comics? Perhaps. How about decorate the inside of a brown paper bag? Classy. These days you have more choices than sifting through your recycling bin.

Let’s start with the box. You can now find gift boxes in woven jute or hemp. These boxes not only use earth friendly materials but also are attractive enough to repurpose or display.

Now for the wrapping paper. There are many environmentally friendly options out there. Some of the most common include recycled or organic paper. And contrary to popular belief, these generally have a smooth texture and a shiny appearance. There are also other eco choices including paper made from hemp, bamboo, banana fiber, and even recycled tires. Fair trade versions are available supporting sustainable materials and fair working conditions. And FSC-certified versions are also on the market promoting responsible logging and fighting deforestation. For truly green gifting, choose either soy or vegetable print on chlorine-free paper to avoid chemicals that produce environmental damage.

No gift is complete without a bow on top. You can find options made with recycled contents like foil or yarn.  And test you handiness by eliminating the tape as it tends to interfere with the paper recycling process.

One other option would be using a gift bag. If you decide to avoid the hassles of wrapping, consider a fabric bag, pouch or tote that can be passed on from giver to giver. It can get frequent use doubling as a reusable grocery bag.

Let’s face it, gift giving isn’t going to end any time soon, nor should it. With eco friendly packaging, your gift will also be appreciated by the environment. For more thoughts on eco-friendly gift wrapping, see Wrap it up.
