Machinga’s visit and railcar spin were brought on by the need to solve the ever-growing transportation issue in his country, especially around the capital of 1.5 million people. With economic growth of over 8% last year and many commuters living in the suburbs outside of town, this energy efficient means of alternative public transportation is desperately needed.
Machinga was very encouraged by his experience as he believes that the British technology will be employable in Zimbabwe as well. This low-carbon tram may be just what the country needs to reduce the growing congestion and vehicle emissions.
