Be sure to service you AC unit before summer comes. Why oh why does the air conditioner always quit on the hottest day of the summer? It just so happens to be the most common time because that’s when an air conditioner is working the hardest. It’s due to the heat that is created by the unit added to the heat of the day which equals a great amount of stress for an air conditioner. And good luck finding an air conditioning technician during the summer. If one is available, getting a good deal is unlikely.

We need more energy efficient air conditionersThe U.S. Department of Energy claims that the energy we use in an average house is responsible for twice as many greenhouse gas emissions as an average car. This is due to the fact that much of the energy we use in our buildings comes from fossil fuels. Therefore, any conservation action plan we implement should consider the building's cooling system as a major part of the efficiency solution. So how do we go about comparing these air conditioning units from an efficiency and cost-to-operate perspective?

Blueprints for an evironmentally friendly homeHere are a number of different ways to make your home green. Ideas range from energy efficiency to eco-friendly household products. Your home can exist harmoniously with the environment while being a healthy and safe place for you and your family.

The Building Performance Institute (BPI) is a non-profit third party organizationThe Building Performance Institute (BPI) is a non-profit third party organization that develops standards for building safety, energy efficiency, and weatherization retrofit work. Their system considers almost every aspect of a building. The major focus is on building safety and energy efficiency. With this in mind, a BPI auditor inspects all combustion appliances and tests for the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Logo of the environmental portestion agencyEPA is the acronym for the Environmental Protection Agency, a government organization tasked to regulate any practice that may have an adverse effect on the environment. Created in 1970, the EPA became the US government’s answer to increasing qualms about the wanton disregard of some industries and their unsafe practices that pose hazards to human health and the environment in general. In fact, the world as you see it today would have been in a much worse state had the EPA not been created.

people working to save our fresh water sourcesTwo-thirds of our earth’s surface is covered with water. It plays a vital role in cooling the land and sustaining life. It provides habitat for multiple ecosystems as well as allows people to grow food, carry waste, generate power, as well as many other functions of daily living. Over 250 million people in the US rely on freshwater from our rivers, streams, lakes, and ground water supply. Yet, with the majority being saltwater, less than 0.7% of our planet’s water is fresh water.

BiomassIs there a way to avoid wasting waste? The answer is yes: biomass. Biomass is organic plant and animal materials that can be utilized to produce a renewable energy source, otherwise known as bioenergy. It seems science is learning how to pull energy from just about everything.

Hydro power damHydropower or hydroelectric power comes from using water to make electricity. Water cycles from ocean evaporation to cloud formation to rain and snow precipitation to runoff back into the ocean. Since this cycle and its energy is a continual endless loop, hydropower can produce renewal energy. Currently more than 75% of hydroelectric power is generated from renewable sources.

Logo of the EPA's Indoor airPLUS partner program The EPA created the Indoor airPLUS new home label to help builders meet the growing consumer preference for homes with improved indoor air quality. Utilization of this program allows us to offer a more thorough service to our clients. This system addresses building materials, HVAC, combustion pollutants, pests, Radon and moisture control issues. It requires an inspection by a certified third party to ensure that all of the program specifications have been met.

chemical storage caution signIt is a simple fact of life that things get dirty and we need cleaners, solvents, powders, sprays and the like to stay on top of it all. Many of these chemicals carry warnings and cautions on how to properly store them. Large varieties of these products are petroleum based and have warnings stating that they are flammable and/or poisonous. People have come up with some strange, and even dangerous, storage places.

A green solution for e wasteWith new technology coming out everyday, it’s a common response to go out and upgrade. This practice has been going on for decades. The result of which is an increasing number of electronic devices filling up landfills. For the unaware consumer, throwing out the old device is expected. However, this increase in electronic waste can lead to dire consequences.

a plant in an earthy potThe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that levels of indoor air pollutants can be 2-5 times, and occasionally more than 100 times, higher than outdoor levels. So what do you do if you think your home or business may be causing Sick Building Syndrome (SBS)? If there is a possibility that SBS is present, the first step would be to bring in a building specialist to conduct a professional investigation.
