A boy playing in the sunFrom time to time, almost everyone spends too much time in the sun. The resulting burn is the body’s natural reaction to the over exposure. As ozone depletion increases, ultraviolet (UV) radiation increases. Light from the sun is the primary source of UV radiation (UVR) and over exposure is much more common. Damage to skin cells happens in much shorter time frames and has lead to an alarming increase in occurrences of skin cancer.

Happy healthy babyHaving a precious little bundle of joy in the house is truly delightful for any family. Generally, baby preparations begin months before the baby arrives. Cribs, rompers and strollers are purchased. Light sockets, cabinets and sharp objects are secured. But, what about the air that the baby breathes or the floor that the baby crawls on? This article will help you get your ducks in a row before the baby comes.

chemical storage caution signIt is a simple fact of life that things get dirty and we need cleaners, solvents, powders, sprays and the like to stay on top of it all. Many of these chemicals carry warnings and cautions on how to properly store them. a compact florescent ligh bulb in hand Switching from traditional light bulbs to CFLs is an effective, accessible change that everyone can make right now to reduce energy use. Lighting accounts for close to 20% of an average home’s electric bill. ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs use up to 75% less energy and last up to 10 times longer than incandescent light bulbs. They also have a small up front cost and provide a  quick return on investment. That all sounds great: so what's the catch?

Some have various cleaners for the kitchen, for the bedrooms, and for the bathroom. They all seem to remove the dirt and grime. But you might not realize that you are inhaling harmful chemicals as you go about scrubbing dirty areas of your home.

little man on faucetEvery day people turn on the hot water faucet and let the cold water run until it gets hot. All of that cold water runs down the drain during the wait.  An easy way to live “green” is to capture that cold water and use it to water your plants or freshen your pet's water bowl. This is a minor habitual change that will save you money and help to stretch the fresh water supply. However, there is another solution that will help you save all of that water, as well as give you more convenience.

mold samples being tested in petri dishesIndoor air quality problems can result from excessive moisture, radon, combustion gases, and many other contaminants that may accumulate inside. The first strategy to achieving good indoor air quality is to stop these contaminants at their sources. However, not all contaminants can be eliminated at the source. For example, moisture in kitchens and bathrooms cannot be completely eliminated.

A happy healthy familyTaking care of the environment is not the sole responsibility of environmental agencies like the EPA or Greenpeace. The burden lies on everyone who lives and breathes on this planet. Adults are also not the only ones who should live green, but kids should be aware of this as well. It is therefore paramount for parents to teach children how to live green at home and at school.
