A mineral makeup brushMany women cast an admiring gaze at the beautiful faces gracing the front covers of various magazines. It’s a known secret that makeup does a lot to make these faces glow. However, while makeup may temporarily enhance the appearance, it may also cause long-term damage to the skin. This is why before grabbing that newly released product off the shelf, it is best to know whether the ingredients used in it are harmful or not.

Know the Harmful Ingredients

One of the ingredients commonly used in cosmetics today is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS). Investigative medical journalist Phillip Day states in his book, Health Wars, that most cosmetic products used today have SLS as one of the ingredients. This chemical strips the skin of its natural oil layer, irritating it, and causing it to become rough.

The low molecular weight of Sodium Lauryl Sulphate could lead to its absorption by the body. If absorbed, this chemical could eventually settle in the brain, heart or liver. It damages the natural barrier of the skin and enhances the allergic response to allergens and other toxins. It is also very dangerous if it comes in contact with the eyes, especially in young children.

Most cosmetic manufacturers utilize this ingredient in their products. It is therefore necessary to know your other options, which could help you maintain glowing skin without damaging it.

The Mineral Makeup Alternative

Due to the growing concern arising from harmful cosmetic chemicals in synthetic makeup, mineral makeup is becoming more and more popular. This type of makeup allows women to continue using beauty products without having to worry about health issues connected to them.

Mineral makeup contains minerals that have been sterilized and then pulverized into a very fine state. Once these minerals become extremely fine, they are then mixed with natural inorganic hues to achieve a variety of makeup color.

The Benefits

The primary ingredients in natural mineral makeup include various minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide. These minerals soothe the skin and offer sun protection.

Mineral makeup is also considered non-comedogenic, allowing the skin to breathe without clogging pores. It also is gentle on the face as it does not dry out the skin. The safest choices are those free of harsh chemicals such as fragrances, silicone, talc, mica, wax, oils and dyes.

In addition to the beautiful benefits that mineral makeup provides the user, the production of any products without harsh chemicals and toxins is always more eco-friendly than considering the process that includes hazardous materials.

Mineral Makeup: Isn't it ironic... We were makeup to make us look beautiful. Yet, some makeups have chemicals that are actually irritating and damaging our skin... which of course only leads us to feel compelled to wear it even more. What a vicious cycle. I wasn't too keen on switching from my traditional makeup to the powdery minerals. But, now, I definitely think that I should give it the ol' college try!

I love makeup! Love it love it love it! Now don't get me wrong I'm not lay it on with a spatula but it can really help a girl hide that which should not be mentioned or highlight something and bring attention to it.

I am very surprised to hear that the cosmetic companies would stoop so low for results without at least warning us that the product might speed up the aging process. But then who would buy it. Its just a nasty little circle. Mineral makeup seems like the best option for me from now on.

I stopped wearing makeup when I learned about these ingredients. Now, after a break from it, I think I'm ready to try mineral makeup.
