One of the many ways you can promote the health of your family and the environment is by utilizing natural cleaning products. A natural cleaner, unlike synthetic home cleaners, does not contain harmful chemicals such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are detrimental to the health of your family. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has outlined some adverse health effects caused by prolonged exposure to VOCs. These health effects include nose and throat discomfort, allergic skin reaction, headache, nausea, and fatigue among others.

Why Baking Soda?

Sodium bicarbonate, more popularly known as baking soda, is a natural mixture of chemical salts. This natural material dates back to ancient Egypt where it was used for brushing teeth and even in the mummification of their dead.

There are various benefits to using baking soda. It’s a multi-purpose cleaning agent effective on a variety of surfaces. It does not contain toxic chemicals, like some synthetic home cleaners, which are harmful to the health. And it is relatively inexpensive compared to synthetic home cleaners.

How to Use Baking Soda

Baking soda can be used as a cleanser and a deodorizer. You can scrub off dirty surfaces using it and it can also be used to remove bad odors in the air.

In the kitchen, you can use baking soda as your all around kitchen deodorizer. You can simply place a small bowl of baking soda inside the refrigerator and it will keep your fridge smelling fresh. You can also try this in your cupboards and in the freezer. Don’t forget to sprinkle a little in the bottom of your kitchen trash can to fight odors that accumulate there.

For your laundry needs, you can add baking soda to your laundry to keep clothes smelling fresh. This also helps in removing grease stains.

In your bathroom, you will also find that baking soda can do wonders in removing stains. Just combine one part water and three parts baking soda to make the perfect baking soda paste. A baking soda drain cleaner can also be effective by pouring 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar then rinsing it through with warm water. If the sink has a garbage disposal, check with the manufacturer before using the drain cleaner.

These are just some of the ways that you can use baking soda at home. With this natural cleaner, you can be sure that you are protecting your family’s health as you scrub away stubborn dirt.

You can also use it to kill cockroaches. If you mix 1 part backing soda and one part sugar it will attract them, but it is also fatal!
