Energy Reduction
One way of teaching green to your kids is to show them how to reduce energy consumption at home. You can demonstrate to your kids how important it is to turn off the lights, computer, television or other appliances after using them. You may want to couple it with a short explanation about how this simple act could mean so much for Mother Earth. Don’t expect kids to remember these household rules immediately. Just keep explaining to them how an energy efficient home can do wonders for your family in terms of savings. You will be encouraged one day when you see your kids turning off the lights and switching off appliances without being told. The trick is being a constant example.
Proper Waste Management
Sustainable homes have a proper waste management process. Your kids can learn how to segregate waste materials. Have them distinguish biodegradable from non-biodegradable trash. Also, teach them to separate plastic and glass containers for reusing and recycling later on. Paper should be segregated as well for recycling. This can lessen the number of trees being cut down each year. You can then impart to your kids the importance of recycling paper by revealing to them how trees are cut and processed into paper. Showing children the variety of goods that can be reused and recycled will help them to make more conscientious choices now and in the future.
Organic Kids
Your kids should also understand that it is important for them to eat healthy and organic foods. You can explain to them the adverse effects on the body caused by eating foods that have been sprayed with chemicals and pesticides. At the same time, you can tell them about the nourishment that the body needs to stay healthy. Organic kids have a diet that encourages them to stay healthier, stronger, and more resistant to diseases.
Reduce Greenhouse Gases
Instead of bringing your kids to school in your car, you can have your kid take the bus instead. This will help reduce greenhouse gases that are emitted into the environment by vehicles every day. Many school buses these days run on natural gas which is a healthier option for your kids and the environment. If grouping your errands and dropping your child off at school is part of your route, try carpooling with others in the neighborhood. Even one less car on the road helps when you consider how many years of school your child will have.
The same thing goes for the parents as well. You can take the train or bus, or better yet ride a bicycle if possible, when going to work. After all, you are setting an example for your children to follow and repeat with their children.
These are just a few simple tips to save energy. When your kids follow these practices, they will be contributing to help save the environment in their own little way. Every little effort adds up in a big way.
Taking care of the environment is not the sole responsibility of environmental agencies like the EPA or Greenpeace. The burden lies on everyone who lives and breathes on this planet. Adults are also not the only ones who should live green, but kids should be aware of this as well. It is therefore paramount for parents to teach children how to live green at home and at school.
