Ink Cartridge Recycling

colorful droplets of ink without a cartridgeConsider the number of computers in most homes and offices around the world. Now think about how many printers are connected to each one of those computers. Although these electronic devices may only be replaced every few years, it is not the same with the consumables, namely the ink cartridges.

The Problem

Even with the economic situation being as it was, according to the International Data Corporation, the fourth quarter of 2009 showed an increase in printer sales of 3.6% worldwide. This increase represents the 34 million printers that were sold that year. As the need for printers is increasing, the consumption of ink cartridges is also increasing. As more consumers throw their empty ink cartridges in the trash, it also leads to more waste materials added in landfills.

Recycling Ink Cartridges

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) together with a variety of consumer electronics manufacturers and mobile service providers and retailers have joined forces to minimize the waste materials resulting from the consumption of electronic products such as computers, appliances, and even ink cartridges. The program, Plug-In To eCycling, has set certain consumer alternatives when it comes to the disposal of old ink cartridges or used toner ink cartridges. These empty ink cartridges can be brought to designated retailers in order to be recycled. In fact there are some entities that offer cash for ink cartridges as an incentive to help minimize waste in the environment.

Virgin empty ink cartridges are usually purchased at a higher price compared to those that have been refilled several times. Virgin empty ink cartridges refer to cartridges that were produced, sold, then brought in to be refilled or recycled for the first time. Virgin empty ink cartridges may be purchased for around $4, whereas cartridges that have been already refilled go for half the price. These rates may vary depending on the recycling station.

Entities that joined in Plug-In To eCycling

The EPA identifies multiple entities that have joined the Plug-In To eCycling program. Retailers include Best Buy, HHGregg, Office Depot, and Staples. Manufacturers include Dell, Fujitsu America, HP, iGo, Intel, JVC, Lexmark, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Sony Ericsson, and Toshiba. Mobile service providers include AT&T, Sprint, TMobile, and Verizon.

Benefits of the Program

The Plug-In To eCycling’s recycling benefits include conservation of natural resources, while at the same time protecting health and the environment. Recycling minimizes waste and the toxic chemicals from electronic products that, if not regulated, may end up polluting our landfills and water systems.

Every year, millions of ink cartridges are being thrown into the waste bin. Apparently, it takes close to 1000 years before these cartridges are properly decomposed. Hence, it is important that we learn to recycle them. You can either have your cartridges refilled or you can return them to the manufacturer for proper disposal. Usually, there are instructions in the box on how to recycle. Some companies even give free packaging and postage for those who are interested to recycle their ink cartridges. The simple act of recycling cartridges will not only help the environment, but it will also benefit your budget.

A lot of companies will give you those little pre-paid pouches. You just stick the used cartridges in the pouch & drop them in the mail. Couldn't be easier! Leaves no room for people to have an excuse not to.
