Defining Green Products

People are becoming more and more aware of the ramifications on the environment caused by the choices they make. In fact, statistics show that in 2007, there was an 8% increase in the purchase of green products. A survey among consumers showed that 93% would choose products made from sustainable materials compared to others. So what are these so-called green products?

Green Labels

Green products are those items considered eco friendly. This means that the manufacturer of the particular product took the proper steps in ensuring that the environment was not harmed during its manufacturing process. The raw materials used in the product were derived from sustainable sources. And the production should have a low impact on the environment regarding waste, carbon emissions and energy use.

To identify which products are eco friendly look at the labels. Third party certifiers such as Green Seal certify products made from sustainable materials. The USDA also has a National Organic Program (NOP) certifying sustainable practices that meet organic standards. These certifications can help you choose green products.

Chemical-Free Products

Choosing chemical-free products is not only a good idea for the planet but for your body as well. Try to avoid products that have Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) in their labels. This chemical is often used in personal hygiene products such as shampoo, astringents, soaps and body gels. The Federal Food and Drug Administration had been encouraging manufacturers to exclude SLS from their products since it is an irritant. Among other reactions, the chemical can cause hair loss and skin infections.

It is always best to check the labels of the products you buy. Opt for those that use organic ingredients or have a low chemical content.

Shopping for Green Products

In addition to the product itself, consider the type of packaging that comes with the product. Look for items with minimal packaging made from recycled materials or with materials that can be recycled. These are identified by the mark of three-arrows forming a triangle. In 2005, we generated approximately 246 million tons of municipal solid waste in the US. Packaging can be a big culprit of waste if not managed.

Indeed, green products can be anything that helps in the conservation of the environment, whether during the manufacturing process or after. The more that we promote green products the more we promote sustainable options.
